This page is used for sharing information about the work of the group, the seagrass demonstration sites in the South China Sea and Gulf of Thailand, and seagrass national action plans, and to provide access to reports of the working group's meetings. This page is the responsibility of the Regional Working Group on Seagrass and is overseen by the working group's Chairperson. Click here to access national reports on seagrass in the South China Sea produced by members of the RWG-Seagrass. Background -The Regional Working Group on Seagrass During the preparatory phase of the SCS Project (2002-2004), actions at the national level within the seagrass sub-component included the establishment or re-vitalisation of National Committees or technical working groups, to review national data on biodiversity; management; restoration and development activities impacting each habitat; research and publications; economic evaluation; institutions and legislation; and development of compatible, inter-linked national systems for regional data management. These preparatory actions have provided the background for the development and updating of national action plans for seagrass in the South China Sea and Gulf of Thailand, including required legislation, in order to maintain nationally important habitat areas. At the regional level, the Regional Working Group on Seagrass has been working to develop guidelines for national management plans to maintain regionally significant habitat areas of transboundary significance; draft and finalise, for adoption by governments, the criteria for the selection of priority transboundary habitat areas; and apply the criteria to identify and prioritise areas for future management, protection/restoration. A key outcome has been the selection of priority seagrass sites for initiation of demonstration projects, and the Regional Working Group has agreed upon regional targets and priority actions for inclusion in the revised Strategic Action Programme (SAP).
