This is the UNEPSCS.org page for the Regional Working Group on Fisheries. The Regional Working Group on Fisheries has developed a web portral in support of its' key activity of establishing a regional system of fisheries refugia in the Gulf of Thailand and Sea China. This portal can be accessed by clicking here.

Background - Regional Working Group on Fisheries

The fisheries component of the SCS Project, entitled Over Exploitation of Fisheries in the Gulf of Thailand, focuses on transboundary fisheries issues in the Gulf of Thailand and South China Sea.

The key activities of the component include:

  • Establishment of a system of fisheries refugia to maintain important transboundary fish stocks in the Gulf of Thailand,
  • Development and implementation of programmes to provide information at the community level, on fish stock conservation and sustainable fishery practices among small and artisinal fishing communities,
  • Promotion of the Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries and related regional guidelines in coastal fisheries, and
  • Evaluation of a blast fishing detection system.

In terms of integrated fisheries and habitat management, the RWG-F is working at both national and regional levels to promote the guidance provided by the Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries (CCRF) and the related ASEAN-SEAFDEC Regional Guidelines for Responsible Fisheries in Southeast Asia (RGRFSA) for the management of identified fisheries issues in the SCS Project’s suite of coral reef, seagrass, mangrove, wetland, and multiple habitat demonstration sites. This work is also intended to foster collaboration between fisheries and environment agencies; various levels of government; and other stakeholders in the implementation of actions focused on developing best practice in integrated fisheries and habitat management in the region.

The aim of this activity is to make a substantial contribution to the achievement of the overall goals of the SCS Project, which are:

“to create an environment at the regional level, in which collaboration and partnership in addressing environmental problems of the South China Sea, between all stakeholders, and at all levels is fostered and encouraged; and to enhance the capacity of the participating governments to integrate environmental considerations into national development planning."
