THE YELLOW SEA LME

The Yellow Sea Large Marine Ecosystem (YSLME) is one of 66 Large Marine Ecosytems (LMEs) in the world. This large shallow productive sea covers an area of 400,000 km2 and is shared by China and South and North Korea. With a coastal population of 600 million people (>12% of the world’s population), it is not surprising that the Yellow Sea is one of the most heavily exploited LMEs on the planet. Unsustainable fishery practices, harmful algal and jellyfish blooms, pollution, habitat modification and other challenges have taken a toll on the Yellow Sea’s biological resources and have had a detrimental impact on the many coastal communities relying on its natural resources for sustenance and well being.

THE YSLME II PROJECT

The UNDP/GEF YSLME Phase II Project builds upon nearly a decade of regional cooperation between China and South Korea. Phase II, which is in line with GEF-5 International Waters (IW) strategic priorities, is currently providing assistance to the two countries to implement the SAP.

Phase II is also supporting the institutionalization of the YSLME Commission, a mechanism which will serve as a permanent non-legally binding framework which helps the countries secure long-term regional efforts to reverse the decline of biological resources of the Yellow Sea and restore depleted fish stocks.
