YSLME PROJECT

Phase I (2005-2009)

The first phase of the project, UNDP/GEF YSLME Phase I, led to the development of a Strategic Action Programme (SAP) for the Yellow Sea. This roadmap charts specific management, legal, policy and institutional actions and reforms China and South Korea cab follow to address key transboundary threats and achieve sustainable management of the Yellow Sea’s many natural resources.

In 2009, China and South Korea commited to implementing the SAP while DPR Korea entered as an observer. Another positive outcome was the formation of the Yellow Sea Partnership, an alliance of key local, national and international stakeholders who work together on activities which support implementation of the SAP

Phase II (2014-2019)

The second phase of the project, UNDP/GEF YSLME Phase II, is now providing assistance to the two countries to implement the SAP and support institutionalization of the YSLME Commission. This mechanism is envisaged as a permanent non-legally binding framework which continues to implement the SAP into the future after the life of the project.
