Scope of work

REC Romania was among the first REC country offices established in the region. From the early stages of Romania’s transition to democracy, the grants schemes, networking support and training programmes managed by REC Romania ensured the emergence and growth of a genuine, diverse and active community of environmental NGOs. Support to NGOs continues to be high on REC Romania's list of priorities, bearing in mind that the Government of Romania is obliged to engage in open dialogue with environmental civil society on issues related to EU accession.

Since 2000, strategic partnerships have been created with the Ministry of Environment and Waters Management and its network of regional and local environmental agencies, which have benefited from the growing expertise of REC Romania in the areas of climate change, waste management, public participation in water management and planning for environmental investment. All of these topics are of great importance in achieving conformity with the EU environmental acquis.

The profile of REC Romania has been promoted among stakeholders through the technical assistance provided to local authorities in the form of local environmental action plans. At the same time, this work has enabled REC Romania better to understand the challenges and needs arising from the implementation of different EU directives and multilateral agreements.
