The main goal of the project is to raise public awareness and commitment regarding the benefits of introducing measures for the protection of territories within the ecological network Natura 2000 in Bulgaria. The project also supports teachers to disseminate knowledge among their pupils, as future representatives of the local community.


  • Review and analyse EU practice in terms of Natura 2000 education and biodiversity conservation: The sharing of good practices and knowledge; the organisation of national roundtables to enhance the development of education for Natura 2000 and sustainable local development.
  • Needs assessment of educational institutions: Analysis of schools and municipalities to support the development of environmental programmes at Natura 2000 sites.
  • Elaboration of a national concept for the interpretation and communication of Natura 2000 in Bulgaria.
  • Development of educational aid for extra-curricular education in secondary schools to share information about the Natura 2000 sites.
  • Educational aid in 15 pilot schools working on Natura 2000 sites in Bulgaria.
  • Teacher training on the potential of education for environmental protection with a methodology for application during the school year.
  • Dissemination of education for Natura 2000, toolkits for environmental education at regional level, and promotional materials.
  • Setting up and organising local discussion forums on Natura 2000 in five municipalities from the target regions.
  • Elaboration and implementation of an information campaign on Natura 2000 in schools and municipalities in five districts of the country: West Stara Planina (Berkovitsa/Belogradchik); Danube region (Svishtov/Belene); West and Central Rhodope Mountains (Smolyan/Luki); Black Sea region; and Dobrudja region (Kavarna/Provadia).

  • Enhanced flow of information and teachers knowledge and skills on subjects connected to the Natura 2000 ecological network, and particularly about the network at local level.
  • Increased knowledge among pupils of the purpose behind the Natura 2000 network and of its benefits for local communities.
  • Commitment inspired among local stakeholders towards the establishment and management of the Natura 2000 network in Bulgaria.
