NGO Initiatives for Sustainable Development in the Western Balkans

This publication highlights a two-and-a-half year granting programme, funded by the European Commission’s Community Assistance for Reconstruction and Stabilisation (CARDS) programme, designed to support the development of NGO initiatives for sustainable development in the Western Balkans. The report describes the reasons for targeting this sector and the role of NGOs in promoting sustainability. It describes the process and outcomes of the programme, reflects lessons learned and proposes practical steps for civil society organisations in the region. It is hoped that the publication will serve as an inspiration and a resource for others, whether they are developing new programmes to promote sustainability or are civil society activists looking to learn from others
