Striving for Sustainability

A Regional Assessment of Environmental Civil Society Organisations in the Western Balkans

December 2007 | Print | Book

Environmental civil society organisations (CSOs) are catalysts in the quest for sustainable development and key actors in building civil society in the Western Balkans. For several years they have received support from foreign and domestic, public and private donors, yet questions remain about their level of development and the extent of their role in the region.

To answer these questions, the REC carried out an extensive survey of CSOs in Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Kosovo (as defined under UNSCR 1244), the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Montenegro and Serbia between April and September 2006, comprising an in-depth assessment of the status of CSOs in South Eastern Europe; and in-depth analysis of the challenges and opportunities they face.
