Biodiversity in the Pacific islands

The Convention on Biological Diversity

SPREP is supporting a number of activities in the lead up to CBD COP 9 in May 2008.

CBD workshop for Pacific Least Developed Countries (LDCs):

In May 2007, UNEP and SPREP, collaborated with the Government of Samoa to hold a Pacific LDCs Workshop to strengthen capacity for CBD negotiations in preparation for CBD COP9 - which will be held in Bonn, Germany 19 - 30 May 2008. The main aims of the workshop were to strengthen capacities in implementing and in negotiating the CBD in the five LDCs in the region. (Kiribati, Tuvalu, Solomon Islands and Vanuatu)

SBSTTA 12 and WGRI 2 (July 2007):

SPREP provided preparatory assistance to island member countries to attend these meetings. The Pacific delegation consisted of representatives from Palau, Kiribati, FSM and the Cook Islands. Information on these meetings is available from Ana Tiraa (anat@sprep.org)

SPREP will provide similar support for those Pacific island countries in attendance for SBSTTA 13, which will be held in Rome, Italy, 18 - 22 February 2008. Items on the agenda include, in-depth review of the Programme of Works on agricultural, forest, and marine and coastal biodiversity (seabed and biogeographical classification), invasive alien species (report on consultations re. international standards) and emerging issues as yet undefined. This will also include the Protected Areas Programme of Work Working Group.

Joint SCBD/SPREP subregional capacity building workshop on implementing NBSAPs and mainstreaming biodiversity in the Pacific

This consists of two separate events, one a planning day held at the 8th Conference in Alotau and the second a three day workshop held back to back with a preparatory meeting for COP 9.

Preparatory Meeting for the Ninth Conference of the Parties (COP 9)

Following on from the well received preparatory meeting for COP 8 held in Fiji in 2006, SPREP in partnership with the Foundation for International Environmental Law and Development (FIELD) are looking for resources to organize a similar preparatory meeting in April 2008 for PICs attending COP 9. The meeting aims to prepare, familiarize and prioritize issues for PICs to follow at COP 9 and assist with regional policy coordination.
