Biodiversity in the Pacific islands

Pacific Invasives Initiative

SPREP is one of 8 partners that make up the Pacific Invasives Initiative (www.issg.org/cii/PII/) whose coordinating team is co-housed with the Invasive Species Specialist Group (ISSG) at Auckland University, New Zealand.

The PII goal is to conserve island biodiversity and enhance peoples’ livelihoods in the Pacific by reducing the impacts of invasive alien species. This goal is being achieved through the objective of reducing negative impacts of invasive species primarily by managing them at selected Demonstration Projects in Pacific Island Countries and Territories. The fundamental role of the Demonstration Projects is to raise awareness of the negative effects of invasive species on biodiversity and people’s livelihoods, generate support for their management and improve the capacity of communities to manage invasive problems.

SPREP attended the fourth meeting of the Partners and coordinating team in June 2007. SPREP the Pacific Invasives Initiative and Pacific Invasives Learning Network work in close collaboration and partnership (along with SPC) on invasives issues in the Pacific.
