Towards environmentally sound management of PCBs in Alexandria
More than 100 participants attended the workshop organized by SCP/RAC and MEDPOL on Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB) management in Alexandria, with the support of the Egyptian Ministry of State of Environmental Affairs (MSEA), from 24 to 27 February on 2014.
The workshop aimed at introducing the environmentally sound management (ESM) of PCBs to local experts while also training them on oil sampling and analysis of PCBs by using the semi-mobile analyzer L2000DX.
The practical training was conducted at the paper company RAKTA, including taking oil samples from several in-use transformers onsite.
The workshop comes within the framework of the MedPartnership sub-component 2.3: Environmentally Sound Management of Equipment, stocks and wastes containing or contaminated by PCBs in national electricity companies of the Mediterranean countries. Participants were from ministries and government institutions, transformer maintenance facilities, laboratories, private companies as well as NGOs and academics.
