Press Conference on the MedPartnership's achievements for 2010

On the occasion of its Second Steering Committee Meeting, the MedPartnership will hold a press conference on March 16, 2011 in Damascus, Syria to present the project's overall progress and achievements for 2010. Special attention to the activities in Syria will be given.

MedPartnership 2010 Annual Report: main results achieved

The MedPartnership 2010 Annual Report report, prepared by UNEP/MAP, has been recently published. It focuses on the main results of the Regional Project achieved in 2010, with a brief section on the status of the World Bank Investment Fund projects.

The Ain Al-Ghazala coastal lagoon and Elba Island in Libya are proclaimed as Marine Protected Areas

Based on the results of the field surveys undertaken as part of the MedPartnership (by the MedMPAnet and MedPAN South projects implemented by SPA/RAC and WWF MedPO respectively), the Libyan Ministry of Agriculture, Animal and Marine Wealth has declared the Ain Al-Ghazala coastal lagoon and its facing Elba Island as a Marine Protected Area (Decision No2_Year 2011 of 17 January 2011).

The 8th Meeting of the Circle of Mediterranean Parliamentarians for Sustainable Development (COMPSUD) took place in Cairo, Egypt on 15th December 2010.As it is the common practice with COMPSUD Meetings, the event included two parts: The Civil Society Dialogue between Parliamentarians, NGOs and media which was attended by approximately 70 participants from almost all Mediterranean countries as well as a closed session among Parliamentarians.

Outcomes of the 10th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity

The 10th Meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP 10) to the Convention on Biological Diversity held from 18 to 29 October in Nagoya, Japan, ended successfully, having adopted a biodiversity plan for the following 10 years and other crucial texts for biodiversity conservation.

ICZM Protocol to the Barcelona Convention enters into force following Syria's ratification

On November 2010, Syria deposited its instrument of ratification of the Integrated Coastal Zone Management in the Mediterranean Protocol, 2008 (the ICZM Protocol), thus bringing the total number of the ratifications of the Protocol to six. After this latest development, the Protocol will enter into force on the thirtieth day (30) following the date of the deposit of at least six (6) instruments of ratification, acceptance, approval or accession (Article 39 of the ICZM Protocol).
