Biodiversity in the Pacific islands

National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (NBSAP)

SPREP recruited a biodiversity strategy and planning advisor for a six month assignment in 2007 to review the status of NBSAPs in the region and provide support to national NBSAP Coordinators. This support was primarily in terms of enhancing capacity and identifying key areas to addressing in planning and implementing NBSAPs. In summary the work included:

  • A regional review of the current status of NBSAP production, development and implementation across the 14 Pacific CBD Parties (through the Roundtable and NBSAP working group).
  • Provision of direct consulting services to two nations at juxtaposing stages of NBSAP development and implementation (Solomon Islands and Samoa). By focusing on their different needs and challenges, the systems developed and mechanisms observed as effective the lessons learned are useful for other nations at comparable stages of the NBSAP process.
  • Planning and provision of training and capacity building of NBSAP coordinators and associated personnel, both at the National and Regional level.

This position was supported through the Commonwealth Secretariat.

NBSAP Working Group

An NBSAP Working Group and email network was formed back in 2004. There have also been annual NBSAP meetings (supported by NZAID) to facilitate information sharing and cooperation between NBSAP coordinators in member countries, to promote NBSAPs to Roundtable members and improve monitoring and evaluation of NBSAPs as a means to track and ground-truth implementation of the Regional Action Strategy for Nature Conservation.
