IUCN
[World Conservation Union] Library and Resources
The IUCN library is a unique repository of publications, periodicals,
scientific and technical reports prepared by IUCN, its Regional and Country
Offices, Commissions and partners. The Library website hosts access to
a number of excellent environment databases including:
IUCN Environmental
Law Centre
The ELC-libraries collection, based in the IUCN Environmental Law Centre
in Bonn, hosts one of the world's largest and most comprehensive collections
of environmental law and literature. It covers the entire spectrum of
issues related to environmental conservation: from soil pollution to genetic
resources, from water quality to waste management. IUCN, through the Environmental
Law Centre, has pioneered the digitalization of its huge information resources
since the late sixties.
ECOLEX: a gateway to environmental
law
ECOLEX is an information service on environmental law, operated jointly
by FAO, IUCN and UNEP. Its purpose is to build capacity worldwide by providing
the most comprehensive as possible global source of information on environmental
law. This unique resource, which combines the environmental law information
holdings of FAO, IUCN and UNEP, seeks to put this information at the disposal
of users worldwide, in an easily accessible service, employing modern
technology. The ECOLEX database includes information on treaties, international
soft-law and other non-binding policy and technical guidance documents,
national legislation, judicial decisions, and law and policy literature.
Users have direct access to the abstracts and indexing information about
each document, as well as to the full text of most of the information
provided.
The Biodiversity
Economics Library
This library is devoted to the economics of biodiversity. The site is
sponsored by IUCN and WWF and aims to promote economic approaches to the
conservation of nature by providing access to key documents, a calendar
of events, and a database of practitioners around the world.
The Protected
Areas Database
The World Database on Protected Areas (WDPA) provides the most comprehensive
dataset on protected areas worldwide and is managed by UNEP-WCMC in partnership
with the IUCN World Commission on Protected Areas (WCPA) and the World
Database on Protected Areas Consortium. The WDPA is a fully relational
database containing information on the status, environment and management
of individual protected areas.
MPA Global: a database
of the world's Marine Protected Areas
This website publishes the world's first explicitly marine-focused database
of the world's protected areas that have some intertidal and/or subtidal
component. It is currently based largely on information in the World Database
on Protected Areas (WDPA) Version 6.1. The aims of this database are to:
provide information that has not, to date, been readily available;
attract feedback to further improve the quality and breadth of information
available.
IUCN's Species Survival Commission Species Information Service (SIS)
Through its volunteer membership of 7,000 species conservation experts,
IUCN's Species Survival Commission (SSC) holds what is probably the world's
most complete body of information on the status and distribution of species
threatened with extinction. Although abundant, the data and information
contained within the SSC network is widely dispersed and sometimes difficult
to access. The Species Information Service is being developed as SSC's
data management initiative to address this problem.
IUCN Red Data List tof Threatened
Species
IUCN - The World Conservation Union, through its Species Survival Commission
(SSC) has for more than four decades been assessing the conservation status
of species, subspecies, varieties and even selected subpopulations on
a global scale in order to highlight taxa threatened with extinction,
and therefore promote their conservation. The taxa assessed for the IUCN
Red List are the bearers of genetic diversity and the building blocks
of ecosystems, and information on their conservation status and distribution
provides the foundation for making informed decisions about conserving
biodiversity from local to global levels.
Learning for Sustainability
(LfS)
Efforts towards sustainability in any field are built on processes for
communicating, learning, and sharing knowledge, engaging people in their
multiple roles as individuals, and as members of communities and organizations.

Island Partnership (GLISPA)
The Global Island Partnership (GLISPA) assists islands in addressing one
of the world’s greatest challenges: to conserve and sustainably
utilize the invaluable island natural resources that support people, cultures,
and livelihoods in their island homes around the world. It brings together
island nations and nations with islands — small and large, developing
and developed — to mobilize leadership, increase resources and share
skills, knowledge, technologies and innovations in a cost-effective and
sustainable way that will catalyze action for conservation and sustainable
livelihoods on islands. It is recognised by the Convention on Biological
Diversity (CBD) as a partnership to advance the implementation of the
CBD 2010 biodiversity target, to reduce the rate of biodiversity loss,
and the programmes of work on island biodiversity and protected areas.

the Biodiversity Related Conventions
Six international conventions focus on biodiversity issues: the Convention
on Biological Diversity (year of entry into force: 1993), the Convention
on Conservation of Migratory Species, the Convention on International
Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (1975), the International
Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (2004), the
Ramsar Convention on Wetlands (1971) and the World Heritage Convention
(1972). Each of the biodiversity-related conventions works to implement
actions at the national, regional and international level in order to
reach shared goals of conservation and sustainable use. In meeting their
objectives, the conventions have developed a number of complementary approaches
(site, species, genetic resources and/or ecosystem-based) and operational
tools (e.g., programmes of work, trade permits and certificates, multilateral
system for access and benefit-sharing, regional agreements, site listings,
funds).

Kyoto Protocol is that it sets binding targets for 37 industrialized countries
and the European community for reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions
.These amount to an average of five per cent against 1990 levels over
the five-year period 2008-2012. The major distinction between the Protocol
and the Convention is that while the Convention encouraged industrialised
countries to stabilize GHG emissions, the Protocol commits them to do
so.

effects resulting from the generation, management, transboundary movements
and disposal of hazardous and other wastes. The Basel Convention came
into force in 1992. This website contains documents and information used
by the Parties to the Basel Convention and other stakeholders.
Rotterdam Convention
The objectives of the Convention are: to promote shared responsibility
and cooperative efforts among Parties in the international trade of certain
hazardous chemicals in order to protect human health and the environment
from potential harm; to contribute to the environmentally sound use of
those hazardous chemicals, by facilitating information exchange about
their characteristics, by providing for a national decision-making process
on their import and export and by disseminating these decisions to Parties.

London Convention:
Convention on the Prevention of Marine Pollution by Dumping of Wastes
and Other Matter 1972 and 1996 Protocol
The "Convention on the Prevention of Marine Pollution by Dumping
of Wastes and Other Matter 1972", the "London Convention"
for short, is one of the first global conventions to protect the marine
environment from human activities and has been in force since 1975. Its
objective is to promote the effective control of all sources of marine
pollution and to take all practicable steps to prevent pollution of the
sea by dumping of wastes and other matter. Currently, 85 States are Parties
to this Convention. In 1996, the "London Protocol" was agreed
to further modernize the Convention and, eventually, replace it. Under
the Protocol all dumping is prohibited, except for possibly acceptable
wastes on the so-called "reverse list".

Worldwide Science: the global
science gateway (international database search portal - books and
journals)
A new portal that crosses both international and database boundaries was
launched recently for people interested in scientific sources that are
unavailable through commercial search engines such as Google. WorldWideScience.org
was developed by the Energy Department and the
British Library, along with science and technology organizations in Australia,
Brazil, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Japan and the Netherlands. It
employs federated search technology a search method that simultaneously
executes a query against an array of databases, then aggregates and ranks
the results and gives users a single entry point for searching far-flung
science portals in parallel with only one query... http://worldwidescience.org/
