Economic Valuation Meetings – 2007

Development of Regionally Applicable Total Economic Values for Coastal Ecosystem Goods and Services in the South China Sea

The 6th and 7th Meetings of the Regional Task Force on Economic Valuation were convened in Batam, IndonesiaSipunculid worms in China and Beihai, China from 22nd-25th January and 12th-15th March 2007, respectively. During these meetings the task force: reviewed and amended the regional empirical dataset relating to the values of the goods and services derived from habitats bordering the South China Sea; developed regionally applicable “Total Economic Values” for coastal ecosystem goods and services of the South China Sea; and conducted a cost-benefit analysis of the proposed actions under the revised regional Strategic Action Programme for the South China. Regional Scientific and Technical Committee and Project Steering Committee Meetings for 2006

The 7th Regional Scientific and Technical Committee and 6th Project Steering Committee meetings were convened South China Sea Project Steering Committee in Siem Reap, Cambodia from 14th-17th November and 20th-22nd November 2006, respectively. Important items considered include: development of regionally applicable “Total Economic Values” for coastal ecosystem goods and services; review of alternative regional instruments and mechanisms for marine environmental cooperation in the South China Sea; and the regional Strategic Action Programme. 8th Meeting of the RWG-Fisheries

Identification of Sites for Inclusion in an Initial System of Fisheries Refugia

The Eighth Meeting of the Regional Working Group on Fisheries was convened from 1st-4th November 2006Larval fish distribution and abundance in SCS on Belitung Island, Indonesia. Representatives of all participating countries, the two regional fisheries experts, Mr. Somsak Chullasorn and Professor Nygiel Armada, and 5 representatives from SEAFDEC, including Dr. Yasuhisa Kato and Dr. Somboon Siriraksophon, participated in the meeting. Ms. Chee Phaik Ean, Head of the Aquatic Ecosystem Section of the Malaysian Fisheries Research Institute, attended the meeting on behalf of the Malaysian Department of Fisheries. Batu Ampar Mangrove Demo Site

Memorandum of Understanding Addendum Signed for the Batu Ampar Mangrove Habitat Demonstration Site 
 
 The South China Sea Project Director, Dr. John C. Pernetta, and Mr. Nyoto Santoso, Indonesian Focal Point for Mangroves and Director of the Indonesian Institute of Mangrove Research and Development, co-signed the addendum to the Memorandum of Understanding covering the operational plan for activities at the Batu Ampar Mangrove Demonstration Site in Indonesia on 4th September 2006. The signatures were witnessed by, the Vice-Governor of West Kalimantan Province, Indonesia, Drs. H. L. Kadir.

Seventh Meeting of the Regional Working Group on MangrovesThe Seventh Meeting of the Regional Working Group on Mangroves was successfully convened in Pontianak, West Kalimantan Province, Indonesia from 4th – 8th September 2006. The meeting was attended by mangrove component focal points from all participating countries, except the Philippines, 2 of 3 regional experts on mangroves, and 11 local government officials and other observers from West Kalimantan Province, Indonesia. 5th Meeting of the RTF-Economics

Regional Working Group on Economic ValuationThe Fifth Meeting of the Regional Task Force on Economic Valuation was successfully convened in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia from 21st -24th August 2006. The meeting was attended by all the government designated experts of the Task Force and the regional expert, Dr. Tridoyo Kusumastanto. The Task Force is mandated to derive estimates of the Total Economic Value of the four major habitats bordering the South China Sea for use in the cost-benefit analysis of action versus non-action scenarios in the regional Strategic Action Programme.

7th Meeting of the RWG-Lb Pollution

Water treatment in Southern ChinaThe Seventh meeting of the Regional Working Group on Land-based Pollution was convened from 7th – 10th August 2006 in Sihanoukville, Cambodia. The meeting was attended by all focal points (or their alternates) for the land-based pollution component, three regional experts, and staff of the Project Co-ordinating Unit. The meeting was aimed at inter alia reaching agreement relating to the land-based pollution component inputs to the Regional Strategic Action Programme for the South China Sea.
